DOWNTOWN MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

While it might not open when originally promised, Bass Pro at The Pyramid is expected to bring in more money than initially projected.

Memphis has done the necessary repairs to the "Tomb of Doom" and recently handed the building over to Bass Pro.

The money the city would see yearly from the giant Bass Pro Shop at The Pyramid in the Pinch District may have doubled and will open in December 2014.

Though we have heard several times the grand opening date for Bass Pro downtown has been pushed back for years, Memphis City Councilman Myron Lowery said he's confident December 2014 will stick.

"Good things don't happen overnight," Councilman Lowery said. "It takes a long time. This contract was difficult to put together but right now we're showing a light at the end of the tunnel."

Patience may reward the city of Memphis. Bass Pro is signed on to pay a minimum $1 million rent, but a new timeline released Friday by the city said it will likely be higher with the addition of the rooftop, sky ride and restaurant.

Councilman Lowery said it could as much as double what Bass Pro hands over to the city.

"There aren't many opportunities to re-use an arena like The Pyramid," he said. "Many buildings like this have become large churches, but we're developing this into a tourist destination, one that's going to promote jobs for the community.

Bass Pro took control of the building in August. Bids for construction are out now. The final result is described as a family friendly tourist destination that will attract tourists to Memphis from the entire Mid-South.

"Can you believe there will be cabins?," the councilman said. "That's the hotel, a rooftop restaurants, a sky ride, bowling alley, bungee jumping -- it's going to be a destination point and entertainment venue."
