MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Two Kirby High school students were placed in police custody Tuesday after a gun was found on school grounds.

Kirby High was locked down for a period of time after school administrators received a tip about drugs inside the Hickory Hill neighborhood school. When police responded to that call Tuesday morning, police received an anonymous tip about a weapon.

Police said a student detained for drugs and another person for the gun that was found behind the school by the football field.

"Another students had brought a gun into the school," said Memphis Police Col. Mike Ryall. "We located that student, talked to him briefly. He showed us where he hid he gun and we secured it."

RELEASE FROM SHELBY COUNTY SCHOOLS:

"SCS Security received an anonymous tip that a student may be in possession of a firearm. As a precaution, the school was placed on lockdown. The student was questioned. Officers swept the building and no firearm was located inside the school. A handgun was found behind the campus near the football field. MPD is handling the investigation."

Police located the gun behind the school, near the football field. Officers immediately questioned the student as to why he brought the weapon to school.

"We're looking into it, we're in the investigation process right now to determine what his reasons were," Col. Ryall said. "We're just getting started with that and we don't know why right now."

The weapon was never inside the school, Col. Ryall added.

A Kirby High parent told FOX13 News students shouldn't be worrying about drugs, guns, or weapons. They need to be in the  classrooms learning for their future.

"A lot of nonsense is going on," said Keith Brooks, parent. "All of us as parents feel very uncomfortable that our children, our kids, are not safe in school. Once they go home, we want them to come back the way they left."

The lockdown of the Shelby County Schools high school was lifted after officers conducted a sweep of the school grounds.

Col. Ryall said in the past seven weeks since the district started school his fellow officers have responded to several weapons calls throughout the county.

"It's going to take the entire community to step forward and stay on top of this thing," he said. "Eventually we'll beat it."
