Oakland Co. Exec. L. Brooks Patterson breaks elbow

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (myFOXDetroit.com) -

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson broke his elbow and will be in a small cast for the next six to eight weeks.

Patterson suffered the injury getting out of his car at a fundraising event last week.

The recent injury comes about a year after Patterson was involved in a major car accident, from which he is still recovering from some of those injuries. He goes to physical therapy three times a week and occasionally is seen using a wheel chair.

"One of the lingering effects of the accident is a loss of equilibrium. Bam - I feel myself fall, and I reach for the door ... and [it's] beyond my reach. It was one of those surreal moments where you could actually see the pavement coming up, and you knew you were going to hit it so you had nothing to condition your fall. Bam. Bam. My shoulder hit, my elbow hit, then my head hit," Patterson explains to Fox 2.

He added the pain from this fall was as bad as when he broke his hip.
