Stray Bullet Hits School Bus In Camden

Posted: Updated:
CAMDEN, N.J. -

Kids were being driven home for the day, when a bullet ripped through their school bus. One of the more than two dozen children on that school bus was injured. That child, a four-year-old boy, was burned from either the bullet or metal from the bus. He was taken to the hospital and released. Tonight, police need your help hunting down the shooter.

Parents are holding on tight to their children after their school bus got caught in the middle of gunfire.

"I am too overwhelmed. I can't get it together. I am still shaking. It's crazy," said Shaniece Williams, a mom.

Shaniece Williams picked up her 3-year-old daughter from the crime scene on ninth street in the Centerville section of the Camden. Her daughter was one of the 27 young children on the way home from school, when a stray bullet shattered a passenger window.

"We called to see where the bus was, and they told us the bus was part of a shootout," Williams recalled.

Camden police tell us that a man with a rifle was walking down Phillips Street when he fired 14 rounds across a park and into the city's Branch Village Housing Complex. It happened just after three p.m.

"This individual is displaying sociopathic behavior, obviously pulling out a rifle in the middle of broad daylight and firing it into a densely populated housing project," said Camden police chief Scott Thomson. Chief Thomson says that the shooting was drug and gang related.

"It seemed this individual was trying to send a message to his rivals or competitors," said Thomson. "He's public enemy number one for us now."

Investigators believe they know who may be involved. For now, police are stepping up patrols in the area while parents breathe a sigh of relief that their little ones are safe.

"I just know my daughter's fine and she's ok," said Williams.

There is now a 20,000 dollar reward on the table for anyone with information on the shooter.
