EAST MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -
A man who Memphis Police say barricaded himself in his Jamaica Avenue home late Wednesday night after an argument with his girlfriend, was found dead Thursday morning inside the house.
A family member of the suspect told police they found the man deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police surrounded the Jamaica Avenue home until about 4:30 a.m. Thursday morning. Police said the man was intoxicated at the time and they let him sleep it off. Police said the man might have passed out.
Police said they couldn't confirm the man was in the house, and left the scene about three hours later.
The unidentified man fired a gun and then retreated into the home sometime after 9 p.m., Memphis Police spokeswoman Sgt. Karen Rudolph said.
He reportedly shot at his girlfriend as she attempted to leave, police said. She was not struck by the gunfire.
Police turned off their lights on their cruisers and surrounded the home. Many of the officers drew their weapons.
Neighbors said the incident started with a fight inside the house with the suspect's girlfriend. It spilled out into the street. The man pulled out a gun and shot out the windows of his girlfriend's car.
She ran for help and neighbors called 9-1-1 for police assistance.
The woman was treated by paramedics but remained at the scene.
