Dr. Oz Talks About Healthy Weight Loss

Posted: Updated:

A new report suggests that obese teenagers who lose weight are at greater risk for eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. Therefore, it's important to find balance to prevent a seemingly healthy diet from spiraling into an unhealthy obsession. Dr. Mehmet Oz of the Dr. Oz show talked to FOX 29 and gave advice on healthy weight loss for all.

80 percent of teens in this country are eating their way toward heart disease, so when teens lose weight, their parents and health providers are naturally happy to see progress and want to be encouraging.

However, according to Mayo Clinic researchers, eating disorders often go undiagnosed in teens who have lost a lot of weight, because weight loss is seen as such a positive thing.

Dr. Oz advises everyone to remember this: looking good is the side effect, but it's the healthy eating and the occasional exercise that's truly good for your body. Catching an eating disorder early is important. If someone's losing weight in your life, look for signs of bingeing or unusual food restriction. And make sure to build self esteem around skills and talents, not appearances. In addition, fuel that self esteem with unconditional love.
