Good Samaritan praised for helping man escape beating at East St. Paul bus stop

Posted: Updated:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

After weeks of violence plaguing East St. Paul, the community is praising a Good Samaritan who helped a man escape a potential beating at a bus stop on Pedersen Street near the Sun Ray Shopping Center.

The close call came on Saturday night, just a few miles from where several group attacks took place last month. It began when a group of 10 to 15 young men allegedly shouted racial slurs and threats at a 26-year-old man waiting at the bus stop, with one member allegedly saying, "Let's get this white fool."

St. Paul police say the victim is white and the other men in the group were black, but what officers say happened next is helping renew hope in the community.

According to police, a Good Samaritan -- who is black and wants to remain anonymous -- drove by, honked his horn, flashed his lights and even offered the victim a ride home.

Lately, no news has been good news for that area. Many people who heard about the incident initially expected the worst in light of recent violence, including the near-fatal beating of Ray Widstrand last month. Instead, the community is thankful another attack was prevented.
