Indicted DeKalb CEO's phone calls wiretapped

DECATUR, Ga. (AP) - Attorneys, consultants and others are being notified that authorities used a wiretap to listen to their phone calls with indicted DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis and his former campaign manager.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports an attorney for Ellis, Craig Gillen, says the official's mother, sister and religious counselor are among those whose calls with Ellis were tapped. Ellis is suspended from office awaiting trial on charges that he illegally pressured county vendors to contribute to his campaign.

Lawyers for Ellis and his former campaign manager, Kevin Ross, are among those who got letters. Gillen says he's concerned the wiretaps breached attorney-client privilege.

Erik Burton, a spokesman for District Attorney Robert James, declined to say how many notification letters were mailed or how many conversations were recorded by authorities.
