Emory plans remembrance of Irish poet Heaney

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - Emory University is planning a special remembrance of Irish poet Seamus Heaney who died last week in Dublin.

Heaney and the university had a relationship that spanned three decades and a significant portion of the poet's papers are part of a collection held at the university. Materials include manuscripts, photos, recordings of readings and lectures, and personal and literary correspondence.

Heaney had visited Emory in March, and a major exhibition is planned for next year.

University officials say Tuesday's remembrance will be free and open to the public. It's set to begin at 5 p.m. at the Robert W. Woodruff Library.

Heaney died Aug. 30 at the age of 74. He had won the Nobel Prize in literature and gained global recognition as Ireland's greatest poet since William Butler Yeats.
