Tens of thousands expected at Navajo fair parade

Posted: Updated:

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. (AP) - Tens of thousands of people are expected to fill the Navajo town of Window Rock on Saturday for the tribe's largest fair parade.

Camping tents line the streets days ahead of the parade as people hope to secure prime viewing spots.

The parade is the one time of the year when traffic jams are common in Window Rock. The roads close early Saturday morning for the hours-long parade.

Saturday's events also include a carnival, rodeo, a fry bread contest, award presentations, exhibits and the introduction of the new Miss Navajo. Fair spokeswoman Geri Hongeva says up to 60,000 people are expected to attend the events.

The weeklong fair ends Sunday.
