Remote-controlled helicopter kills teen

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A 19-year-old man playing with a model helicopter in a field in Brooklyn was killed when the chopper hit him in his head, officials said.

The accident happened in a field in Calvert Vaux Park, near Bay 44th Street and Shore Parkway in Bath Beach at about 2:15 p.m., the FDNY said.

Police identified the victim as Roman Pirozek Jr.  He suffered severe head trauma, the fire department said.

Calvert Vaux Park allows the flying of model aircraft in designated fields.

The Seaview Rotary Wings club maintains a field and organizes model helicopter flights there.  A person named Roman Pirozek is listed as the vice president of the club, according to its website.  The AP reported that he is the victim's father.

A spokesman for the Muncie, Ind.-based Academy of Model Aeronautics says he believes Pirozek's death is only the second death caused by a remote control helicopter in the United States.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

New York City subway riders are getting back service on the G train between Brooklyn and Queens. The return of service comes as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority reopens a tunnel Tuesday that was heavily damaged by Superstorm Sandy. The Greenpoint tunnel has been closed for five weeks for repairs. Shuttle buses were provided between G stops in Queens and Brooklyn during that time.
