SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

In a press conference Wednesday, Shelby Township Police confirm 2-year-old James Nelson died of hyperthermia, also known as heat stroke. Police believe he was left strapped inside a blue Dodge caravan directly in the sun for hours.

He was discovered Tuesday evening.

"I think the temperature was in the low 70's that day. In the sun, it doesn't take long for [the car] to reach 130 degrees. The child's temperature was 108 degrees at the hospital," Chief Roland Woelkers says.

Police are still investigating the child's death. The biggest question on the table right now is, who was watching the boy? Neighbors say they've called Child Protective Services after seeing the child wandering alone around the neighborhood before.
