Inside Recycle Ann Arbor's green mission

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WJBK) -

Cars roll into Recycle Ann Arbor's drop off station on Ellsworth Road and it's time to start sorting!
For a $3 entry fee, people can recycle all kinds of materials.  From glass, to paper, plastic and even Styrofoam. In July, the facility also started accepting mattresses. $15 for a twin, full or double and $20 for a king or queen.

It's estimated 14-million mattresses go into landfills every year. And now, the drop off station also has a secure setup for document shredding. The service just started September 1st.

Christine Chessler-Stull, Outreach Coordinator for Recycle Ann Arbor said, "It's just important, especially today you hear a lot about identity theft and things like that so if you have a small business in my opinion are in a secure manner destroyed."

Here's how it works. The shredding service costs $4 per grocery bag of document sand $6 per bankers box.  That's about 25 cents a pound. People can drop their papers into the bins, and Recycle Ann Arbor doesn't even have a key. You'll receive confirmation from the company that does the shredding that your documents are gone.

The locked bins are only handled by NPR Recycling in Romulus. Their facility is so secure we weren't even allowed in with our cameras. They say they go to great lengths to protect their clients' confidentiality.

"The hospitals use them we definitely think that we can trust them," Chessler-Stull said.

There's also a truck at the group's Jackson Road facility that will shred things on the spot. But that's only available every second Saturday of the month from April to November.

People can use the drop off station on Tuesdays and Thursday from 8:30am to 6:30pm and Saturdays from 9-6.

The non-profit group says about half the materials they collect are kept out of landfills. You'll find more information at Recycleannarbor.org.
