Accused teacher killer ordered to undergo psychiatric evaluation

UPDATE: Smith had his first court appearance today on the first degree murder charges of special needs teacher. The judge ordered that Smith undergo a psychiatric evaluation. He is due back in court on September 19.

Police say Carl Smith Jr. has confessed to murdering Bronsha Lewis this morning in court.

Smith was in court this morning answering to charges of theft of property after he was found in West Memphis, Arkansas driving the victim's 2003 Chevrolet Impala.

Ms. Lewis was found beaten to death Friday morning, Aug. 29, inside the University Cabana apartment complex on Oakmont. According to police she was beaten with a blunt object. During the investigation, it was discovered that the victim's car had been taken from the scene. A broadcast of the vehicle was issued.

Ms. Lewis was a Special Education (SPED) Assistant at William H. Brewster Elementary School. She also worked as a site assistant for the before-care program in the mornings at Idlewild Elementary.
