2 Suspects Charged In Local Student's Fatal Beating In WV

PHILADELPHIA -

Two men are in custody in West Virginia in connection with the weekend murder of a college student from the Philadelphia suburbs, police say.

Police say 21-year-old Kevin Figaniak, of Perkasie, and a friend were beaten by three or four men near Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia.

Figaniak, who was from Perkasie in Bucks County, died at a Pittsburgh hospital from his injuries.

Wheeling police said Tuesday morning that they, with the assistance of the Ohio County Sheriff's Department, arrested Craig Peacock and Jarrett Chandler shortly after midnight at a campsite frequented by workers in the oil and gas industry.

Both men have been charged with murder. They were arraigned and are being held on $1 million cash bond each.

"This investigation remains a very active one," police said in a news release. "Although additional charges may be forthcoming, no additional details will be released at this time."

Meanwhile, Figaniak's former high school principal issued a statement Tuesday, saying the school and community are "saddened and shocked" by the news of his death.

"Kevin was an outstanding young man with a high level of energy and a very competitive nature," Principal Dr. Thomas Creeden said. "Kevin was a hardworking student with a love for ice hockey and lacrosse. He continued that eagerness for competition through his college years at (Wheeling Jesuit University) where he followed his passion for lacrosse and his educational goals. "

Creeden went on to say that Figaniak had a very positive outlook, teachers described him as always upbeat and caring for his teammates and peers, and he'll be sorely missed.

A Pennridge School District statement added, "His senseless death should serve as a reminder to all of us that life is precious and we should cherish every moment with our loved ones."

Figaniak's former lacrosse coach Tom Wyatt called him a standout young men who had a passion for the game and learning the lessons it had to teach.

"Over the span of four years you develop a bond with your athletes, and mine will never be broken with Kevin because he lives in my and his teammate's hearts forever," Wyatt said. "My heart goes out to his mother and father and family."

Ryan Harrison was a teammate of Figaniak.

"Outgoing person. He was always friendly, never really seemed to have a problem with anyone. Everyone got along with him and just hearing about this really shocked me," Harrison told FOX 29's Bruce Gordon.

"No, that's a shame. I have no words for that. This has got to stop. It really does. I'm very upset. Violence has to stop," says Michelle Bash, a current student at Pennridge.
