Big gators bagged on Mississippi season's 1st day

UNDATED (AP) -

Hunters bagged some big gators as Mississippi's season opened.

Ellisville hunters Brandon "Boo" Maskew and Allen Purvis tell the Clarion-Ledger (http://on.thec-l.com/17AQhGo) their catch is a double state record - a 10-foot-long, 295.3-pound female.

If it's verified, they'll hold Mississippi's record for both length and weight for female alligators. Their catch was Saturday on the Pascagoula River.

That's where bow hunters from Oxford tell The Sun Herald (http://bit.ly/17eV0r2) they shot a 12-foot-long, 575-pound gator on Saturday. Roman Kling and Dylan Williams are storing it for now in a walk-in cooler.

Mississippi's alligator program coordinator, Ricky Flynt, says wildlife agents from across the state tell him it was a really good opening day.

The season will end Sept. 9. An alligator hunting permit is required.
