NYC public pools see wave of after-hours swimming

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - As New York City prepares to close its outdoor public pools for the season, one statistic is making a bit of a splash: A jump in people caught swimming after-hours.

The Daily News reported Monday that 53 people were found doing that this summer, compared to nine last year.

Parks Department spokesman Arthur Pincus says all were kicked out, but not arrested.

Most of this summer's incidents were at the Edenwald Houses pool in a Bronx public housing complex.

City pools are open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. They close for the season Monday.

More than 1.53 million people visited outdoor public pools citywide as of Wednesday. That's about 13% fewer than last summer.

Officials note this summer wasn't too hot.
