Violence continues as 2 more killed in Newark

Posted: Updated:

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Two more people have been killed in Newark, the latest in a spate of violent incidents that have plagued the city in recent days.

Essex County authorities say both victims, 24-year-old Ebony Martin and 43-year-old Anthony Smith, apparently were targeted by their assailants. But they declined to provide possible motives for either incident.

Martin and another woman were attacked and stabbed Saturday afternoon on Parkhurst Street. Both were taken to a hospital, where Martin died a short time later.

The second woman, whose name wasn't disclosed, was treated and released.

Later Saturday afternoon, Smith was shot multiple times at a home on Irvine Turner Boulevard. He was pronounced dead a short time later at a hospital.

The deaths were the sixth and seventh killings in Newark during the past week.

For decades, making some quick cash was the main drive behind so many who took the ride down the parkway to Atlantic City. But with so much to choose from nowadays, it looks like Atlantic City is in a lot of trouble.
