Giant lighted ad boards going up in DC's Chinatown

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, DC -

If you thought Chinatown came alive at night with a kaleidoscope of colors-- wait until October.

That's when four giant video screens mounted on the outside of the Verizon Center will start showing advertisements. An addition welcomed by some but not all.

The giant LED boards--four of them-- will go up on the Seventh Street side of the arena facing G Street as well as the front of the building facing F Street.

The company putting them up says they will be bright but will not cast their light throughout the night.

The bigger ones measuring 20 feet by 50 feet--will go up on the Seventh Street side of the building with the small ones attached to the building facing f street.

Some people in the neighborhood are okay with it but others have issues.

Nanette Paris, President of the Downtown Neighborhood Association, says too much light can be bothersome. She's also concerned they could distract drivers.

But a few people we talked to on Seventh Street today said they had no problem with the larger screens and in fact welcomed them.
