ROSWELL, Ga. -

The wish of a lifetime came true Thursday for a 97-year-old Roswell woman.  Vilma Hofer was once a piloting pioneer in her native Slovakia, and she got the chance to fly in a World War II era biplane one last time.

Hofer is a celebrity at her assisted living facility.  Her neighbors at Freedom Point Roswell were there to cheer her on as she set out to make history one last time.

Hugh Hofer says his mom earned her pilot's wings on a dare when she was 25.  Her picture graced the page of a magazine, so she was forced to tell her mother what she had done.  Her son says while most women stayed home, his mom was always an adventurer.

Vilma Hofer needed a little help getting in the plane this time.  But she was all smiles as she took off in the plane from McCollum Field.  She had a glorious flight, and it's likely a memory she'll cherish just like the first time she took to the skies solo.

Hofer said she got her life back by flying in that plane on Thursday.

The group Wish of a Lifetime made Mrs. Hofer's dream come true.  They're a non-profit organization that grants lifelong wishes to seniors who have overcome tremendous challenges.
