Thieves steal mom's ashes from Douglas Co. man's home

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. -

Jack Dodgen says thieves stole the one thing in his house that can't be replaced.  He says while he was away for a few days, someone broke into his house and stole his mother's ashes.

Now, Dodgen is turning to FOX 5, pleading for help from viewers who might know something about the people who stole his mother's ashes.

Dodgen says he feels like he's mourning his mother, Imajean, all over again.

"I lost her in 2007, and she was gone. And now she's gone again."

Dodgen says he was gone for a few days earlier this week, and when he got back on Wednesday, he found pry marks on his back door.  Apparently, thieves couldn't get in that way, and they couldn't tear off the entire screen to his front door.  So, they broke in through the living room window instead.

The mess has been cleaned up now, but Dodgen says thieves ransacked his home.  They left behind stereo equipment and a TV, but stole sentimental things instead—like the black leather box with his mother's remains inside.  He kept it in his bedroom under some reading glasses.

"I see smash and grabs everyday on TV," said Dodgen.  "I watch you all religiously. But this smash and grab, they took something they don't even know what they got. And I'd really like to have them back. It's my momma."

They also took family heirlooms.  Dodgen says a guitar he got from his girlfriend a few years ago was taken, along with pocket knives that have been passed down through his family over the years.  He says none of that stuff is worth anything to anyone else, but it's worth millions to him.

Dodgen says he'll be happy to have someone call him and drop his things off—no questions asked.

Investigators ask anyone with any information about Dodgen's mother's stolen ashes to please call the Douglas County Sheriff's Department.
