A Memphis Pre-K campaign group supporting an effort to raise the sales tax in Memphis launched its effort Tuesday evening with a rally at the Children's Museum of Memphis.
The group is urging city voters to support the sales tax referendum in the fall. The half-cent sales tax increase would fund more Pre-K programs in the Bluff City.

If the measure passes, it's expected to raise nearly $50 million a year. An appointed commission would run the Pre-K programs.
The budget for Pre-K programs was slashed by the federal government and in doing so Shelby County Schools lost more than $8 million in funding. With the drastic cut, SCS had to 45 Pre-K classrooms.
