DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

Many heroes have emerged after a gunman walked into a DeKalb County school last week and opened fire, including the 911 operator who took the call and helped a school employee talk the gunman down.  She went back to work on Monday, and she shared her story with FOX 5.

"The call was coming in from the school," Kendra McCray told FOX 5. "I heard the gunshots in my ear, and she's asking me to run."

For 24 minutes, a phone linked a school under siege to the outside world.  DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander said for those involved in the incident, it probably felt like a lifetime.

McCray was the 911 operator who was on the other end of that call.  She says she was nervous.

"Absolutely," McCray told FOX 5.  "Gunshots in your ear. Someone's life in your hands. Yes, very nervous."

Miles away from McNair Discovery Learning Academy, McCray was acting as the eyes and ears for DeKalb County police.  She was also a reassuring voice to school bookkeeper Antoinette Tuff, who calmed the gunman inside the office and convinced him not to kill.

"This was a very unique, unusual type of call," said Chief Alexander.  "One we hope we never have to answer to."

McCray says she stayed focused by thinking of the 800-plus students inside the school.   She credits her strong faith with helping diffuse the danger.

Chief Alexander says the way the situation played out will be used as a training tool for future 911 operators at the communications center.
