Severely beaten Damian to be weaned off medication

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

Little 2-year-old Damian Sutton shocked doctors when he made it through emergency surgery over the weekend to reduce swelling in his brain. But today family members hearing the hard news that his condition is taking a turn for the worse.

Doctors at the Children's Hospital where Damian is recovering say 80% of his brain is damaged. They will begin weaning him off medication starting Tuesday. Doctors say if he is even able to breathe on his own, that's likely all he will be able to do.

Damian was found severely beaten Tuesday, Aug. 20. Police believe it was by 26-year-old Ronald Dimambro Jr., who was dating Damian's mother at the time and babysitting him while she was at work.

Dimambro has admitted to shaking the child, and he is behind bars right now, charged with first-degree child abuse. His bond has been set at $500,000.

Meanwhile, Damian's family still staying positive.

"He's done so well, he's done better than I think I would do in his position, because I would have given up," Amber Gillespie, Damian's aunt, tells Fox 2.

"When it first happened, they told me he wasn't even going to live for, probably, they were hoping for the first couple hours. And he's made it through days now," Damian's mother Nikki Sutton adds. "We're all still hoping. We're not giving up on him."

The family will be holding a fundraiser for Damian Tuesday, August 27th, at Younger's Irish Tavern in Romeo from 4PM - 9PM. The restaurant is located at 120 S Main St  Romeo, MI 48065.
