Girl recovering after being hit by baseball

PALMETTO, Ga. -

It was a catastrophic baseball injury that could have turned deadly if her head was turned the wrong way.

Summer Johnson, 12, of Palmetto, was in a California ballpark last Saturday supporting her brother who was trying out for Team USA when a line drive foul traveling about 95 miles per hour slammed into her. She had no time to react.

Johnson was in intensive care for four days while family, friends and church members prayed for healing. She woke up, but may never be the same.

Doctors say her eye took the force of the hit and may never function properly again. Johnson, who plays softball herself, says she will now only sit behind the netting near home plat.

Her family has set up a fund to help offset the cost of the reconstructive surgeries she now faces.
