Heyward tweets thanks to all, healing after jaw surgery

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Proving a humble man on and off the field, injured Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward posted a grateful tweet Friday morning after undergoing surgery for a badly injured right jaw.

On Thursday, the team tweeted that two plates were placed in Heyward's jaw; one plate on each fracture site. Heyward was injured after being struck by a 90-mph fastball thrown by New York Mets left-hander Jonathon Niese in the sixth inning of Wednesday's game.

Dr. Glenn Maron performed the procedure in Atlanta, the team said.

It's not immediately clear how long Heyward will be out of action. According to a report on MLB.com, he is expected to be out four to six weeks. The Braves regular season ends on Sept. 29. The team currently holds a 15 game lead over the Washington Nationals, making the playoffs a strong possibility.

Friday morning, Heyward took to the Twitter-sphere (@jasonheyward) to thank everyone who's prayed for him and sent their well-wishes for his speedy recovery. Here is an except:

"Morning. Blessed to see another day.

"Before I'm asked to do any interviews regarding my most recent injury, I'd like to personally..

"Thank EVERYONE for their well wishes, positive thoughts and prayers. I'm overwhelmed by the amount of people that have reached out. That love, appreciation and respect makes it hard not to shed a tear. My friends, family and I are grateful. While baseball isn't life I love this game to death. It's also hard not to be frustrated and hurt for my teammates, coaches and fans that I have battled with and received support from all season. My heart goes out to them as I know there's never a right time to be injured but at this point in the season it hits home the most."
