Storms blamed for damage across metro Atlanta

Posted: Updated:
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

Strong storms caused troubles across the metro Atlanta area on Thursday.

A downed tree on East Roxboro Road in Brookhaven took out power lines and stopped rush hour traffic. Georgia Power worked to restore electricity to hundreds of homes affected by the outage.

Fast-falling rain caused some drains to overload. Water pooled on pavements and roadways in the metro area.

Slick roads were believed to have a hand in a tractor-trailer turnover on Interstate 85 north near Spaghetti Junction. The driver was reportedly not injured.

Over in Suwanee, lightning is believed to have sparked a house fire on White Blossom Lane. The homeowner told FOX 5 that she was cooking dinner when the lights started flashing inside and her son smelled smoke.  They ran outside to see the roof on fire.

Another close call happened in Dacula when a tree came crashing down on the back of a home on Mapmaker Drive. Owners said the branches smashed out a window. No one was injured.
