NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

On a cloudy day in Queens, a little sunshine was brought to the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows Corona Park with the kids from the Action Center.

Students from P.S. 207Q in Howard Beach and kids from the Action Center in Far Rockaway participated in a youth tennis clinic at the U.S. Open. The clinic was part of the returning the love initiative, where the U.S. Open, in conjunction with the players, reaches out and welcomes in surrounding community organizations.

"These were kids that were directly from the housing projects where our center is at," said Nelson Sarweh of the Action Center. "These are kids that are in the program and have been doing really well."

U.S. Open champions Serena Williams and Andy Murray led the clinic, which was a surprise to the kids and their families. While the kids had fun playing tennis with the pros, the goal was to create a positive and lasting impact.

The participants were tragically affected by Hurricane Sandy and truly appreciated the time, love, and attention they received.

"An experience they would never have had otherwise," said Lea Giddins of New York Cares. It's nice that something so horrible, can at least bring a fun day."

Nearly all 1,100 facilities providing services in the city's new universal pre-kindergarten program are ready to open on time after passing health and safety inspections. City officials said Friday they expect the eight remaining pre-K schools to remedy violations by Sept. 4's opening day. If they don't, affected children will be temporarily enrolled in other facilities.

Heading into the U.S. Open, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray have won 36 of the past 38 Grand Slam titles, a stretch dating to the 2005 French Open. Nowadays, there seems to be a growing sense — or hope, maybe — among the best of the rest on the men's tennis tour that the quartet might be more vulnerable than ever.
