DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

Friends and family of a local woman being praised as a national hero say that she deserves the accolades.

Authorities credit Antoinette Tuff with saving the lives of students and staff at McNair Discovery Learning Academy after an armed man fired shots at the school. The bookkeeper talked to the alleged gunman and kept him calm until police arrived Tuesday afternoon. Authorities took Michael Brandon Hall into custody and no injuries were reported.

"What she did was amazing and I want to thank her. I'm so grateful for her," said Ashley Hall, a student at the school.

Neighbors in Tuff's Decatur neighborhood are proudly singing the hero's praises.

"To me, she has a relationship with God," said Sundra Burdett. "You know, because for her to put her life in danger for other people tells me, you know, she got a rapport and did what was right."

While he wouldn't go into details, the school's principal, Brian Bolden, promised that Tuff will soon know how much the school and the community truly appreciate her.

"I would just like to say that we have some special things in place for her specifically that I think she is going to definitely enjoy," Bolden said.

Interim DeKalb Schools Superintendent Michael Thurman called Tuff a courageous woman and said the district is planning something special for her.
