Parents: How an empty nest can benefit your health

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

For many metro Detroit families the time has come. You're packing the bags, the microwave, mini fridge, and taking the last child off to school. When the house is suddenly empty, it's the beginning of a whole new chapter.

Watch Deena Centofanti's Healthworks report above.

How real is empty nest syndrome? For some parents, it's very real! If you have an only child, you're a single parent, or you were a stay-at-home parent, an empty nest may be more difficult to face.

"It's not a bad thing. What it means is you've done your job right. Your child has done well in school. They're going off to college, that's the way it's supposed to happen," says Dr. Mike Mckee, psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Mckee says it's still important to be involved in your child's life after they've left for school. He suggests using tools from your child's world like texting and social media to stay connected.
