Tearful reunions mark end of tense ordeal

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

Anxious parents were reunited with their children after a shooting at an elementary school in DeKalb County on Tuesday.

Authorities evacuated Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy Elementary School around 1 p.m. after gunshots were heard. Authorities said they took a suspect into custody.

Students and staff were taken to a safe area outside of the school. Students were led to a grassy field at the rear of the school. Most of the students were seen walking -- some running -- to the gathering area.

Parents gathered at a nearby Walmart as they awaited buses carrying their loved ones.

"We had to make sure that the kids were escorted home by a parent or adult guardian," said interim DeKalb County Schools Superintendent Michael Thurmond.

Just after 4 p.m., parents greeted their children with open arms, thankful that no one was hurt in the incident.

Authorities arrested 20-year-old Michael Brandon Hill in the shooting. There were no injuries reported.
