Medical examiner: Pham had numerous defensive wounds

Posted: Updated:

New details emerged Tuesday in the trial of the man accused of killing a local college student.

Testimony revealed 19-year-old Vanessa Pham put up quite a struggle and fought back before being stabbed to death.

The medical examiner says Pham had a total of 15 slash marks on both hands.

Julio Blanco Garcia sat with his hands gripping the defense table and never looking up as Dr. A. Wayne Williams described in vivid detail how Pham lost her life on June 27, 2010.

She was fighting with both hands before being fatally stabbed in the neck and chest.

“This would not be immediately fatal,” said Dr. Williams. “It would take time for her to bleed [out]. Basically bleeding out is a mechanism of her death. She bled out.”

Dr. Williams told the court Pham had numerous slash and stab wounds to her face, chest and knees.

Would it be painful asked the prosecutor? Would she have time to think? To both questions, Dr. Williams said yes.

The day's testimony also revealed police found a number of items inside Pham’s car, including a cloth baby diaper and a baby bottle.

Clair MacDonald, a friend of Pham’s, took the stand and said she had been in the teen’s car the night before and had not seen a baby bottle.

Defense attorneys say Blanco Garcia had his toddler daughter in the car with him when the attack took place.

Prosecutors then called Detective Derek Hardy to the stand who showed the jury the seat belt Pham was wearing with a slit through the middle.

They were also shown the clothes she was wearing that day as well as the butcher knife blade and handle that apparently separated and were left inside the car after the assault.
