Survey: Women don't wear many of their shoes

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Ask a lady about her shoes and more than likely she'll say "you can never have too many."

"Because it's an accessory," one woman told Fox 5. "We don't wear them to walk. We wear them to look good!"

In the iconic show "Sex and the City," Carrie Bradshaw's obsession with shoes became its own love affair. Like Carrie, we adore our heels, pretty yet often painful. It's one reason why a new study says women only wear a quarter of the shoes they own.

A recent study polled 2,300 adult women in the U.K. Last month. Respondents were found to own an average of 20 pairs of shoes, but confessed to regularly wearing only five.

Uncomfortable from having too high of a heel ranked number one among reasons. 86 percent admitted to having at least one pair they'd never worn.

So why do we women continue to buy shoes we just don't need?

Dr. Jeff Gardere, a psychologist, explains that it makes us feel good.

So the next time you walk by a store window and see a pair of shoes you think you just got to have, here's another little statistic for you: According to some estimates, in her lifetime the average woman spends tens of thousands of dollars on shoes. Yes ladies, that's a car.
