La Michoacana's unique spin on homemade ice cream

It is summertime and that means ice cream!

FOX13 News has found a place churning out dozens of original flavors, fresh every day. But  homemade ice cream  is just the beginning for La Michoacana.

Rafael Gonzalez has the chops. He grew up making ice cream with the freshest ingredients available. You might say, it's a family tradition.
"My dad worked more than 40 years," he said. "It's a tradition in the family. Came from my father to us and we'll teach our sons, our kids."

From Mexico, with love, La Michoacana may be the only ice cream shop in the Mid-South churning up small batches fresh every day. They have more than 70 traditional Mexican recipes, from pine nut and key lime to strawberries and fresh cream.

"Corn ice cream," said Matthew Shanklin. "You wouldn't think it but it was good!"
"She has coconut, she has chocolate, I have butter pecan and mint chocolate chip over here," added Jacob Savage.

"I just gave her carte blanche," said Darryl James. "She gave me vanilla-looking stuff on bottom, pink on top and it's mo-licious!"
The pink is pine nut and it's surprisingly tasty and smooth. FOX13 News tried the key lime pie and the dulche le leche.

"Good, really good. Tastes kind of like toffee."
There are four La Michoacana ice cream shops now in the mid-South. The family opened its flagship shop in Southaven seven years ago. Success came quickly, as customers told their friends, who told their friends ... and, well you know how it works.

"It is infamous. Almost all the chef crowd are like, 'you got to try this!' and I work at a restaurant where we make our own ice cream, and they're like 'you got to try this!'"

In the freezer all we found is the refrigerator with fresh fruit. The reason why is that the ice cream is made fresh every day.

"It's all fresh and all natural," Gonzalez said. "We're never going to do something that would stay in the freezer for two to three months."
La Michoacana's ice cream is made every day, with local ingredients plus cream and sugar. You can taste the difference.
"It seems creamier and smoother," James said.

"It tastes fresh, it's a completely different taste," said Holly Griffith, who visited the ice cream shop for the first time.

"It's probably the largest banana split I've ever seen," she added. "It's pretty amazing. I got strawberry cheesecake and it's pretty good."
Pretty good price, too. It's less than $5.
The fresh fruit and fruit cream bars are yummy and less than $2.

Like sour stuff? Go for the mango chilisicle.

"Mango, it's very good."
But whatever you do, don't order until you try something different.
"you can find cookies and cream, vanilla in any store but if you come here try key lime pie, Mexican cake, Mexican flavors: Dulce la leche, tequila," Gonzalez said.

Fresh. Creamy. Cold. If you like ice cream, you owe it to yourself to try La Michoacana.
