A nine-year-old boy died Saturday evening after drowning in a pool behind a Titus Road home in Southeast Memphis, according to Memphis police.
"It's pretty sad because they are neighbors. I think the whole neighborhood is shocked for what happened," says neighbors Mark Martinez.
Officers and first responders found the young boy unresponsive in a swimming pool at the home in the 1400 block of Titus. Neighbor Marcus Rosser says the family was having a birthday party; his ten-year-old daughter was invited but never made it over to the house.
"We just heard the fire truck pull up and when the fire truck pulled up we just seen the EMT just running out and the police, everybody just running everywhere going to the back," says Rosser.
Martinez adds, "The ambulance was taking the boy away and he was still … I thought he was still alive because they had some stuff like he was breathing."
Paramedics took the boy, who police have not identified, to St. Francis Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Rosser says his daughter is currently in swimming lessons; he is making sure she stays in them following this tragedy.
"They're kids; you got to keep an eye on them," he says, "Make sure everything is safe especially around a pool. There's been a lot of tragedies in Memphis as far as pools this year."
Martinez sat down with his young child after learning the young boy died to explain what happened, saying, "I tell him we have to be careful when we go to a party, every time we go outside we need to be looking out for each other because that could happen to anybody."
Police are continuing to investigate the drowning. No charges have been filed.
