Fire torches 21 units at Marietta apt. complex; 6 total loss

MARIETTA, Ga. -

Heavy fire torched 21 units -- destroying six -- at an apartment buildings on Powder Springs Street in Marietta early Friday. Although there were no fire-related injuries, about 50 people are receiving disaster assistance from the local chapter of the American Red Cross.

Six more of the 21 units suffered extensive damage. It was unclear if these would be still inhabitable by their current residents.

The raging fire ripped through the roof of apartments, with flames reaching at least a dozen yards into the sky. Fire fighters on scene used a ladder top rescue two people trapped on third floor of the affected structure, FOX 5 Atlanta has learned.

There was no official confirmation on what started the fire.
