MARIETTA, Ga. -

Local barbers are being called heroes after stepping in to help a 4-year-old girl who was locked into a hot car. Authorities said the girl's father was inside the barber shop while the rescue took place.

Police say the girl was inside a locked car with heavily tinted windows in the parking lot of Barbers R Us in Marietta on Saturday afternoon.

Barber Rod Simmons was taking a break outside when he heard a honking horn.

"The sound got more intense, so at that time I was like, "Well let me just go over here and see what's going on,' and when I walked over there, the little girl was in the front seat, just covered in sweat and was screaming," Simmons said.

Simmons called for help inside the barber shop and someone called 911. Fellow barber Felix Diaz tried to get into the car and then frantically re-entered the barbershop in search of the car's owner. Diaz said he got no response from anyone inside.

Diaz and others from the shop ran back outside, where a tow truck driver used a Slim Jim lock pick to get the car door open.

Finally, Diaz said, the girl's father walked up as the girl was being pulled from the car.

"He's like, ‘My bad. I forgot she was there,'" said Diaz.

According to arrest warrants and eyewitness accounts, the father, Jonathan Gomez, had been inside the barbershop for about 20 minutes. Diaz said the father hadn't responded when the barber had asked about the vehicle's owner.

Police arrested Gomez and charged him with contributing to the deprivation of a minor.

"I'm just glad we got her out, that somebody saw her and we were able to get her out," said Diaz.

According to jail record, Gomez was released on a $1,000 bond for the misdemeanor charge.

The arrest warrant says that the Division of Family and Children's Services was notified.
