Legislators promise voting rights push

ATLANTA (AP) - State lawmakers from around the country have formed an alliance they say will combat restrictive voting laws that have proliferated in recent years.

Legislators from Georgia, Nevada and Iowa ,among other states, announced the initiative Wednesday at Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Martin Luther King Jr. once served as pastor.

Georgia state Rep. Stacey Abrams describes the effort as nonpartisan, but leaders of the effort are all Democrats and states adopting more restrictive voting laws are run by Republicans.

Abrams says voter ID laws limiting registration opportunities and curbing early voting harms many young voters, older voters, minorities and voters who don't drive.

The Rev. Joseph Lowery, among the last living King contemporaries, joined the lawmakers and urged an enthusiastic crowd to actively push for easier access to ballots.
