Woman shot in head, rushed to hospital by Detroit police

DETROIT (WJBK) -

23-year-old Jazmine Fisher was shot in the head Tuesday night at her home on 28th Street. Detroit Police officers were forced to rush her to the hospital themselves when EMS couldn't get there fast enough.

The mother of three was struck by a bullet in the temple. She is now recovering in the hospital following emergency surgery.

Her family is thankful for the officers' extra effort, but they are upset with the city.

"It's healthcare. We deserve that. We should have that. How dare you not have us with the trucks we need to get people to the hospital for life threatening situations," said Demerris Fisher, Jazmine's mother.

Tuesday, Fox 2's Amy Lange looked into continued problems with EMS not having units available when 911 calls are received. Fisher was shot just four hours after that story aired.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said his officers will continue to do transports. Union president Joseph Barney apologized on behalf of Detroit EMS.

"We're sorry. The men and women of Detroit EMS, the technicians, we're sorry about this. We're sorry we can't get to you in a timely fashion. Trust me, if we could, we would," Barney said Tuesday.

Mayor Bing's office says new ambulances donated by the business community are on the way. An announcement on when those rigs will hit the streets will be made later this month.

A boyfriend is considered a suspect in the shooting. If you have any information, call Detroit Police.
