Blood Drive Being Held To Support Wounded Police Officer Davies

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Citizens and the police force are being encouraged to donate blood Thursday and Friday in a show of support for Officer Edward Davies, who was shot in the line of duty in Feltonville.

Philadelphia police say the blood drive will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

Members of the general public can participate at the Red Cross' Philadelphia Donation Center, located at 700 Spring Garden St., or its Northeast Philadelphia Donor Center at 1401 Rhawn St.

Police officers are being asked to go to Training Room 8 at Temple's Administrative Services Building, located at 2450 W. Hunting Park Ave.

Davies was shot in the abdomen Tuesday while responding to help chase and arrest a man who fled into a mini-mart following a traffic stop.

The 25th District officer, a six-year force veteran and married father of four, was shot at close range by the accused gunman, 31-year-old Eric Torres, and remains in critical condition at Temple University Hospital.

Torres is being discharged from Albert Einstein Medical Center on Wednesday afternoon and is expected to be formally charged with attempted murder and other crimes, police say.

Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said Wednesday morning that Davies had his second surgery overnight due to complications, and he may have lost a kidney. The officer's injuries are still said to be "life-threatening."

While officials have been urging thoughts, prayers and privacy for Davies and his family, they're also organizing a campaign of support on social media, posting memes on Twitter and Facebook that use a "#StandWithDavies" hashtag.

The American Red Cross retweeted the event details in addition to posting this message of support: "Our thoughts and sincerest best wishes go out to officer Davies, his family, @PhillyPolice, and all safety officers."
