Peoria police shoot, kill mountain lion

PEORIA, Ariz. -

A Peoria woman found a cat in her backyard, but this wasn't just any cat, it was a mountain lion!

Take a look at the video -- the big cat roamed around Rebekah Coleman's yard near Lake Pleasant and Westwing Parkways for a while.

Several people in the area called police, saying the animal was being aggressive.

"After I had the kids stop screaming.. told everybody it's okay.. let's make sure the dogs are locked up, the dog door's shut.. and so my daughter went up to lock the sliding door and the mountain lion hissed at her, so then she screamed," said Coleman.  "We gotta make sure everything is secured.. I said it's not going to come through the glass door.. so I said oh my goodness, we gotta get pictures of this."

"It was very photogenic and he was more than willing to let us take pictures.. he wasn't gonna go anywhere.. just stand there and stare at us."

Coleman was also concerned for her neighbor's safety since the big cat jumped over the fence.

"..cleared the side wall of our house with one bound.. like it was nothing.. it took no effort at all," she said.

"Oh goodness, what if he goes to the neighbor's house and into their yard.. sure enough, he jumped the wall and that's when I knew I had to run over there and at least alert the neighbor because if his children were out back.. if something happened.."

The original plan was to move the animal back into the wild, but when Peoria police officers arrived at the scene, the mountain lion lunged at one of them.  Officers were given the go-ahead by Arizona Game and fish to shoot the animal because of its behavior.

AZGFD officials will check to see if the mountain lion had rabies.
