Large awning collapses at McDonald's in DeKalb Co.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

Part of an awning collapsed during lunch hour at a McDonald's in Chamblee on Tuesday.

Passerbys said they heard the awning crash down at the restaurant on Chamblee-Tucker Road, near Interstate 285.

Abdoullye Seck was driving by when he heard the awning collapse.

"The next thing I know I heard a big bang and I looked back and I see the whole side of the McDonald's just come down," Seck said.

DeKalb Fire Rescue officials arrived quickly to survey the scene and check for any victims. Battalion Chief William Roberts says, luckily, there were none.

"Our primary goal is to check for any entrapped people underneath it. We found none. There were no injuries," Roberts said.

The chief says DeKalb County engineers and building inspectors will determine the cause of the collapse.

"As far as we can tell, it just collapsed on its own. It just cut loose," Roberts said.

But some folks who frequent the McDonald's said they're now concerned for their safety.

Fire officials said the building passed its last building inspection, so there's nothing on record about a problem with the structure itself.

County building inspectors will have to determine what went wrong.

Workers erected a fence around the debris late Tuesday afternoon.
