2 DC ambulances catch on fire in separate incidents

WASHINGTON -

Two ambulances caught on fire in separate incidents in the District Tuesday.

D.C. Fire and EMS Capt. Gerald Fraley says Ambulance 27 was dispatched to the 4700 block of Benning Road in Southeast D.C. to help assist police with a patient.

The ambulance fire occurred at around 9:30 a.m. while the crew was inside an apartment. Firefighters arrived to put out the fire.

A second ambulance came to the scene to transport the patient. There were no injuries related to the fire.

D.C. Fire and EMS Chief Kenneth Ellerbe says that ambulance would be taken to their fleet maintenance division to investigate the cause of the fire and the ambulance's service history.

A second ambulance caught fire at around 4 p.m. while parked at the Washington Hospital Center. Firefighters quickly put out the fire and there were no injuries.

Because of the coincidental nature of the fires on the same day, D.C. police will also investigate the incidents.

"I want to be certain that nothing untoward is occurring to these vehicles that could possibly put the public at risk," said Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice Paul Quander.

Ellerbe says the department has been looking into acquiring new vehicles for its fleet.
