PONTIAC, Mich. (WJBK) -

Coach Daimion Redmond's student athletes have been preparing all summer for the first day of football practice for the Pontiac High School team. When the coach arrived, everyone had to take a knee.

"Because of the issue of the district not having insurance, we can't practice until they resolve the issue because of the liability of somebody getting hurt," the coach said.

It is not the way any team wants to start the season, and it is not just football. At least for now, all of Pontiac High's fall sports are on hold.

Pontiac is on a growing list of metro Detroit schools in financial strain. The interim superintendent said Monday's decision to delay fall sports came down to a $41,000 student insurance payment wired Monday morning.

"We are making sure we're scrutinizing every expenditure moving forward, and so the decision to pay the insurance and to postpone the first day of practice was due to safety and making sure we met our financial requirement," said Pontiac Schools Interim Superintendent Kelly Williams.

Thing will get back to normal as early as Tuesday afternoon, which is good news for the football team, but not everyone will be cheering.

"Some sports will be in place, some sports will not be in place next year," Williams said. "Moving forward pay-to-play, so that's going to look different."
