Baseball stadium hinges on Aiken school board vote

Posted: Updated:

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - A proposed $150 million development on the North Augusta riverfront depends on a vote Tuesday by the Aiken County school board.

The board is scheduled to vote on a revised tax incremental financing plan to fund the project. The new plan would allow the school board to exit after 15 years rather than staying for the full 30 years and would avoid using any of its money to build a baseball stadium.

School board member Ray Fleming told The Augusta Chronicle that discussions with city officials have been positive, but he isn't speculating on the outcome.

North Augusta Administrator Todd Glover said the project faces an uphill battle if the school board doesn't participate.

In addition to a stadium, the project will include a parking deck and conference center.
