Support shown for WWII veteran fighting to fly flag

MCDONOUGH, Ga. -

Supporters of a World War II veteran fighting to fly his American flag will gather on Saturday in a show of unity.

John Helton says the homeowners association of his community won't let him display the flag outside of his home.

Since the story aired on FOX 5, some of Helton's neighbors have begun flying their flags to support Helton. Other neighbors have presented Helton with honorary medals.

Helton's wife, Louise, put the flag back up on Friday, even though the retirement community says they'll fine her $25 a day for doing so.

"I feel like it was my cause is worth what I'm trying to do," said John Helton. "That somebody else knows and pays attention to what's going on."

FOX 5's efforts to contact the homeowners association have gone unanswered.

Some legal experts say that it is illegal to prevent flying the Stars and Stripes if they wish.

On Saturday, up to 100 veterans say they'll turn out at the community to salute Helton.

Do you think Mr. Helton should be allowed to fly his flag? Post your thoughts here!
