Kids, activities & time: How one family found balance

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

With the start of the school year, life can get hectic for a lot of families. There are the multiple kids needing to go to multiple locations and, of course, there's homework and dinner, to follow later on.

But, just take a deep breath, parents. It can be done. Good Day Atlanta's Buck Lanford is here to introduce you to a family who are living proof.

It seems that these days, families are busier than ever. As a father of three, it doesn't look like it will be slowing down anytime soon, either.

So, as a parent, how do you balance work, family life, school and extra-curricular activities? You need to have a plan! Meet the Falconers!

Two working parents with four kids. Each kid has their own unique activity and schedule to keep up with – gymnastics, cheerleading, soccer, basketball, football, soccer, lacrosse. Oh, and cross country.

So, you get the idea. The kids in this southwest Atlanta family are involved in just about every sport – except juggling. And, it's up to mom and dad to make it possible.

One parent said, "It can be very overwhelming. Scheduling is probably the main issue. You do, it's who has what? Who goes where? What time? Who's going to take who? How is it going to be done? Who's going to pick up? What's going to happen in between? What happens with dinner? All those things?"

Add to that the stress of the beginning of the school year. But, Kimberly Falconer has a game plan that utilizes both old school and new school tech.

She said, "I use my iPhone and we also have a calendar when we come in the door.  So everyone has to write down on a weekly basis all of the activities that they have.  And, then I kind of synchronize with my husband to say, ‘Hey, what can you do? What can't you do?,' and things like that."

Mrs. Falconer says she actually things the structure of the school schedule makes balancing the family schedule easier. Her partner in crime, Trey, says he's not so sure.

"I feel like it gets harder for me because of all the work that my school kind of puts on us."

Still, the Falconers say they don't plan on slowing down anytime soon. They both said the lessons learned and experiences they shared and share with other parents help make it all worthwhile.

"It really builds character. It teaches priorities. It teaches goals and responsibilities of what they need to do in terms of planning and time management.

And, by the way. They also care for two dogs. The Falconers are lucky enough to have some extended family that they do lean on from time to time. Oh, and car pools can help, too.

But, the bottom line for the Falconers is organization and communication. Coming in third is prioritization. As all of the Falconers kids know, school work always comes first.

Then, maybe one day, there will be relaxation.
