Pickens County facing extensive cleanup after rain

Posted: Updated:
PICKENS COUNTY, Ga. -

The deluge of rain has left the city of Jasper facing major cleanup and repair work. Rushing water washed away a section of road and affected the town's water system.

Jasper and Pickens County have been among the areas hit hard by recent rain.

Jasper Mayor John Weaver and other city employees are working to restore washed-out Gennett Drive and repair a 10-inch water main.

The first priority is to restore full water pressure to 300 nearby residents, but the washout is not the only problem for Jasper. Rushing water damaged the city's water intake along Cove Creek.

While repairs are made, the city will draw water from a nearby reservoir.

On Main Street, jewelry store owner Jim Weeks is one of many residents hoping dry weather will come soon.

The road repair work could take several weeks, according to officials.
