Police Remove Three Children From Home After They Find 'Deplorable' Conditions

PHILADELPHIA -

"The smell was a little bit tough to take."

That's what police said Thursday morning when they arrived at a home on North 9th Street to serve a warrant on 24-year-old Lakeeshanaye Overton. The conditions and the smell inside immediately got their attention.

"When they went in the property, they saw what they described as deplorable conditions," said Captain Jack Fleming during a noon time press conference.

Officers investigated further and say they found three young girls covered in filth living with their parents. They immediately contacted the Department of Human Services and the Police Department's Special Victims Unit.

"The initiating officers are talking to Special Victims, letting them know what they saw," Capt. Fleming added.

"I never seen them filthy," one neighbor told Fox 29.

Neighbors say that while there's a history of domestic problems between Overton and the father of the children, ages four, three and one, the children seemed fine.

"The children was pretty good. We didn't see them much. One of the other neighbors used to get on them cause they didn't get much sun because they didn't come out and play. There's a lot of kids on the block their age," Jeanne Jones said.

The children were taken to St. Christopher's Hospital where they were given baths and examined by doctors. DHS workers arrived at the home to inspect the conditions. They also visited the hospital to question the children.

"Right now there's a joint investigation going on between DHS and the Special Victims Unit," Fleming said.

"They was fine," Jones said. "I never been in her house though."

Police say the warrant for 24-year-old Lakeeshanaye Overton was for simple assault and recklessly endangering another person. She and the children's father are still being questioned by detectives. Charges could be filed tonight.

If the parents are charged, the children will either be placed with a relative or placed in DHS custody until other family arrangements are made.
