Animal shelter worker accused of beating dog with metal bowl

Police have arrested a man accused of abusing dogs in his care at the DeKalb County Animal Shelter.

Authorities say surveillance video shows 26-year-old Calvin Battle beating a dog with a metal bowl. Battle was working for LifeLine, a vendor contracted to operate DeKalb County Animal Services.

The video shows a dog getting out of the pen after the alleged beating. It is not clear if that dog was the abused canine. Another LifeLine employee then brings the dog back. Police say Battle then kicked the dog.

DeKalb County spokesperson Mekka Parish said that Battle was charged with misdemeanor cruelty to animals.

"There was a sergeant from our animal cruelty unit who actually observed this behavior on video," said Parish.

The three animals in the kennel were taken to a veterinarian for evaluation. Parish said if significant injuries are found, the charges could be upgraded to felony offenses.

Rebecca Guinn, the executive director of LifeLine Animal Project, said she is looking into a report that Battle may have been separating dogs which were fighting.

"They need to do what they need to do to protect themselves, but what we saw in the video was unacceptable to us," Guinn said.

The shelter was heavily criticized for deplorable conditions when it was operated by the county, which led to LifeLine taking over operations in July.

Guinn said all employees, including Battle, passed a background check. She said that the company has a zero tolerance policy and Battle is facing termination.

"This is a new employee and he will no longer be with us," Guinn said. "He will be terminated based on what we saw on the video."
